Gambling & Casino Talk from Las Vegas to Atlantic City

Rounding Up Pennsylvania

Posted on July 07, 2009 by Marc

There hasn’t been too much action in Atlantic City over the past week or so, but there has been a small stream of news coming in from Pennsylvania.  I’ll elaborate briefly on each story; a little more than a typical roundup but less than a normal post.

  • Revenue at Sands Bethlehem is dropping pretty quickly.  Revenues are already down to 4th in the state.  I’m surprised that the drop off has been so steep so quickly.  I guess not everything is so rosy in PA.  Sands is already looking to ramp up promotions.
  • A study shows table games would be a benefit to casinos in PA.  No shit.  Take a look at the entire article for specifics if you’re curious.
  • Philadelphia Park has a new name to go along with its casino.  PARX it is!  Read the comments on the article for a couple of quick laughs.
  • Here’s a long read, in part, about building a casino in Philadelphia from Philly Mag.  For full disclosure I haven’t made it all the way through the article, but it seems to be well written.  If you’re interested in Philadelphia this may be for you.
  • A 75 year old woman was charged with disorderly conduct after mixing things up at Sands Bethlehem.  Don’t mess with old people.  I learned this when I was in high school and got pushed out of line for a bus by an old lady.

I’d like to thank JMP14 for submitting a couple articles for this roundup.  My stance hasn’t changed much on Pennsylvania as a gambling destination, but with as aggressive as they’re government is that could change in a few years.

If there’s anything you’d like covered, or would like to submit, feel free to email me at eastcoastgambler [at] gmail [dot] com or message me on twitter @eastcoastgamblr.

Just to give some idea of where the one Philly casino mentioned in the above article will be built – it’s in the old Strawbridge’s building, which is part of the Market St. Gallery mall thingy. Totally accessible by train. In fact, probably more so than by car (not sure what sort of parking there will be for Foxwoods). It’s a few streets over from the Independence mall area and really close to Chinatown and the Convention Center, too. And not TOO far from South Street, although I wouldn’t want to have to make that walk at night. I can totally see myself taking the train in from Norristown once it opens.
