Gambling and Casino Talk from Las Vegas to Atlantic City

Royal Flush and Bobby Flay Steak

Posted on October 29, 2009 by The Commander

I don’t play too much video poker when I visit a casino, but I have two specific times when I do play: when I wake up and when I want to have a drink (or two) at the bar.

I’m an early riser but usually not ready to socialize at 8am.  This is a good time to seek out the 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker machines.  There aren’t too many people around so I don’t feel as though I’m interrupting anyone.  I use my notes from vpFREE to locate the machines the best paying options.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t been able to find the 25 cent 9/6 video poker machines at Harrah’s which I’ve been told are still around.  Fortunately, I was able to find the $1 9/6 video poker machines which are located in the Diamond Cove opposite the $5 9/6 games I played on my last trip.

On my first morning at Harrah’s, while wandering the casino floor,  I happened upon a beautiful $1 9/6 game.  I was playing while I sipped on my latte and listened to a couple of older ladies behind me yuck it up when I was dealt four three cards to a Royal Flush.  I haven’t seen a Royal Flush in just over a year so I didn’t expect anything special and didn’t try to will the final card….

As you can see above I pulled the 10 of diamonds for a Royal Flush!!  I yelped a little and threw my hands in the air.  This was my biggest win of the year in video poker and I was stoked!  The Diamond Cove is small so I didn’t have to wait long to get paid, unlike most areas of the casino.  In fact the attendant was next to me in minutes.  I was fumbling with my iphone trying to take the above picture when she first came over.  I calmed down after a few moments of excitement and cashed out.

Needless to stay dinner at Bobby Flay Steak was on me.

The night at Flay started off with a drink at the bar.  After reading Bill Simmons’ column about not being too old for Las Vegas I decided not to have wine.  Instead, I ordered a Grey Goose and Soda.

This was one of the best drinks I’ve had anywhere in Atlantic City.  It seems as if it’s impossible for the bartenders in Atlantic City to get a perfect mixture of club soda and vodka, but this was perfect.  See…

Still savoring the drink, I headed to the table where I decided not to have any bread or appetizers.  Just bring me a steak!  The waiter recommended the bone in rib eye and that’s what I ordered.  Who am I to argue?

It was a very good steak, but not amazing and not what I was expecting.  I haven’t been to Flay in a while and in the past the steaks sometimes have had a little too much seasoning.  I like the seasoning of the rub and was expecting it again and was expecting it overpower the steak since I was having a rib eye and the fat usually keeps the flavors in.  There was barely a hint of the spice rub and it tasted as if the steak was seasoned with just salt and pepper.  That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I really enjoyed the creamed corn with roasted chili’s and black pepper French fry sides and another Grey Goose and soda rounded out my meal.  There was no room or need for dessert.

Overall dinner at Flay was good but unspectacular.  The steak was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed it.  Although I was surprised by the lack of punch I was not complaining.  The service, drinks and sides were very good and even though I couldn’t finish the steak and I was happy with dinner and ready to head out to the casino for some gambling.
