Marketing $: Atlantic City vs. Las Vegas vs. Delaware
I don’t compare Atlantic City to Las Vegas very often because they’re very different destinations. However, I saw that Atlantic City only spends about 4% of what Las Vegas spends in marketing itself and found it interesting.
…He (Keith Smith, chief executive officer for Boyd Gaming) also wants to see more marketing and advertising to attract customers. He said Las Vegas spends $100 million through it’s convention and visitors authority to help lure tourists, while Atlantic City only spends $4 million.
I’m sure surprised that Atlantic City spends less money overall marketing itself, but I’m curious to find out if these amounts are relative for each market. I’m sure they’re not in line.
That’s just one reason Atlantic City doesn’t measure up with the “competition”. Another reason that Atlantic City doesn’t measure up to competition is the fact that their representatives don’t mind losing market share to Delaware.
“Delaware will be a relatively small hit,” said Don Marrandino, president of the Bally’s, Caesars, Harrah’s Resort and Showboat casinos owned by Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. “It will certainly be in the low single digits, around 1 or 2 percent. That doesn’t keep me awake at night.”
Even if you feel that way, why would you say that in public? That’s just not smart. Way to offend your customers. It’s that condescending attitude that will put you out of business.

it’s also important to note that Boyd in AC == Borgata .. they might be the only ones that can get away with not advertising (as much) at this point
Brandon, I think these advertising dollars are spent by the government through the tourism bureaus. I’ll be searching for more data to do some more comps.
