Gambling & Casino Talk from Las Vegas to Atlantic City

East Coast Gambler

Week In Review 1

Posted on May 09, 2010 by Marc

It was a fun week for ECG.  I was able to get to write up the hotels from my trip to Vegas.  This week I’ll tackle food, gambling and what it’s like traveling solo to Las Vegas.

I’m not sure what I did, but I deleted some things that seem to have the site running a little faster.  The next version of ECG, hopefully coming this summer, should be even faster.

There was a lot of action this week, enjoy the look back.

Wow, that was a busy week.  I didn’t realize how much action there was.

I started another fun aggregating site for East Coast Gambler – Flavors.  It’s nothing too fancy, it just has links to all of the East Coast Gambler pages.  It’s pretty, take a look.

Post Mortem Mayweather Destroys Mosely 0

Posted on May 07, 2010 by Marc

I was straight forward with my feelings about the Shane Mosely v. Floyd Mayweather fight last week.  My haste towards the fight lessened as the fight drew closer.  I can be susceptible to marketing and I almost was here.  At the last minute I decided not to buy the fight because I knew it would be boring – no matter who won.

Mayweather won in a lopsided decision.  Mosely seemed to catch Mayweather with one shot and couldn’t put him away.  That was in the second round and Mayweather won every round thereafter by dodging punches and slapping the old man.

::Y A W N::

I’ve seen this before and don’t really care to see it again.  I was trying to put my thoughts together on Monday when I came across a blog on Dr. Jays (a clothes store) that seemed to touch on how I feel and see others react to Floyd Mayweather.  Instead of taking their thoughts I’ll pass them on as they were written.

After watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. completely dismantle “Sugar” Shane Mosley this past Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, NV, “Money” has proven much more than the fact that he has the skills to pay the bills. He proved that he is hands down the biggest name in boxing today.

But here’s the odd thing. He hasn’t become a huge name by knocking out all of his opponents. On the contrary, he has often been criticized for not having the most exciting fights. It’s rare that you see a true ring tactician without massive knockout power take center stage in boxing. He doesn’t have the backing of a country either. Rather, Mayweather often gets lambasted for his arrogance by Americans who don’t quite understand his persona. But therein lies exactly why Mayweather is where he is today. He’s done something that other fighters haven’t thought to do in order to compliment their skills – create a marketable character.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best villain in the sport. He’s the fighter that people pay to see lose. His pre-fight persona is one that alienates him from people and draws major criticism from mainstream media. He’s the boxer you love to hate. If this were the WWE, he would be the top heel the company would have to offer. And the reason why the character works? He has the skill level to back it all up.

For the past few years, Mayweather has slid comfortably into the role of the quintessential villain. He understands that controversy puts butts in seats and sells pay-per-views. And since most of his opponents are the “good guys”—Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley to name a few—he understands that in order to get casual fans interested, he has to make you want to see him lose.

He’ll throw money at you, torment your lifestyle and talk trash as soon as the pre-fight hype begins. He’ll make you sick by flaunting his financial status every chance he gets. You genuinely feel bad for his opponent and want to see him get hurt. That is the beauty of what Mayweather does outside of the ring.

If you look at the build up to Mayweather vs Mosley you’ll see a Mayweather that utilized the platform of HBO’s 24/7 to further promote his bad guy role. Mosley was your typical nice guy who just so happens to box. In each and every episode Mayweather would berate Mosley and incense not only his opponent, but people who watch boxing.

“I hope somebody shuts him up,” was the prevailing thought cascading throughout the sport. It made people who weren’t interested in boxing ready to spend their money just to see if someone could finally shut the mouth of “Money.”

But alas, Mayweather won again with a virtuoso performance that proved he is the best the sport has to offer. But what the general public doesn’t get to see is the Floyd Mayweather the media talks to after the fight. They don’t get to see the gracious champion with a heart of gold. He loves his family over anything else and cuts the villain role short to reveal a man who simply knows how to market himself like no other.

It’s a side very few get to see. But when you do, it helps you appreciate his presence in the sport that much more. But rest assured, if Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao manage to get in the ring for their highly anticipated superfight, the villain will be back.

And you’ll love to hate him all over again.

Week In Review 1

Posted on May 02, 2010 by Marc

I thought I would be a able to write up my trip to Las Vegas a little more this week, but that was interrupted with a last minute trip to Atlantic City.  That took two nights of writing away.  I had a blast, but the losing streak continued.  Off to a rough start to the year gambling.  Maybe I should stick with sports betting.  I have a bit more control there and I have been winning at a nice clip.

More on Las Vegas coming this week.  Take a look back at last week on ECG.

Shane Mosely vs Floyd Mayweather 3

Posted on April 30, 2010 by Marc

I’ve been hit and miss with the Shane Mosely vs. Floyd Mayweather fight.  First I wasn’t looking forward to it.  Then I got stoked for it.  Then I lost interest.  My final thoughts on the fight are moderate interest tempered with preparation for an unexciting fight.

Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

I can’t remember the last time Floyd Mayweather made a fight interesting.  Sure he’s a great fighter, but Mayweather’s style is boring.  He’s a defensive fighter and counter puncher.  That would make Mosely the aggressor.  He will be able to bring the rukus, but will it be a fun fight?

I don’t know.  Because of this I’ll root for Sugar Shane Mosely to win this fight. Odds are not really compelling to bet on Mosely.

Mayweather is almost a 4-1 favorite, but odds on Mosely aren’t quite 3-1 against.  If Mosely’s odds cross that 3-1 barrier I can see a small wager on Mosely being interesting.  It would also give a reason to spend the money on a fight which I don’t seem to be too interesting.  The fight has an awful undercard, which doesn’t help make me want to spend $55.

After watching the video below I think I’m ready for the end.

Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown Time! 1

Posted on April 30, 2010 by Marc

It’s time for the Kentucky Derby and the beginning of the Triple Crown of horse racing.  It is supposed to rain all day tomorrow.  I’m not sure what that means for the races, but that usually only favors a few horses.  I’ll do research just before the race and tumble or tweet my picks.  Here are the odds from sportsbook.com.

If you have a real strong feeling and want to go for broke there are odds if anyone will be a triple crown winner this year.  I wouldn’t make a -800 bet, but that’s the odds of no Triple Crown winner and the smart money.

Earlier this week there was an awesome and funny twitter meme #SeinfeldDerbyHorseNames.  I know Seinfeld like the back of my hand.  There were tons of funny entries.  Here is a sample, but check out the up to date offerings.

Bet Tracker Pro iPhone App for Sports Betters 0

Posted on April 22, 2010 by Marc

A new, and free, iPhone application is available for sports betters – Bet Tracker Pro.  The app keeps track of your sports bets so you don’t have to keep checking you bet tickets.  Of course, you can’t use a mobile phone in a sportsbook without getting yelled at but if you’re anywhere else this could be an easy way to track your bets.

This looks like a pretty cool app and the ratings are good.  I wish I had this last week in Las Vegas to be be able to review it accurately.  For the time being I’ll test it out in a less than perfect situation.

Note that the free version of the app only allows for tracking of one bet.
